    New Computer

Learning how to program a Cisco switch is something accessible to a teenager. Just buy a used one off eBay and play on it following the documentation available on Cisco's web site. Now tell me how a fifteen-years-old is supposed to get access to an AS400?

I'm sorry to learn the bad news for your wife too, Chewy. All I can say is that I've known several people who had cancer over the years and those who tend to fare better are those who kept seeing life in a positive way. I know it's hard to do, but if your wife fall into depression, in my...

    Hypothetical New PC

You could do worse than a Lenovo TS140 for 384$ (without the hard drive). It has a quad-core Xeon E3-1225v3 (Haswell). Just 4GB of RAM, but it's still enough to install a modern OS and run a few applications. All you need to add is a hard drive.

    New Computer

Want to learn something relatively simple that will garantee you a job in the foreseable future? Learn the Cisco CLI for their switch. Probably half of the IT world runs on Cisco switch and AFAIK, there is and has been a short supply of people knowing how to manage them properly. It's boring...

Weird send email under Exchange issue on iPhone iOS 6

I have a user here who cannot send e-mails through his Exchange account on his iPhone, but only when he's connected to the 3G/4G network. It works when he's connected to the local wifi. The iPhone is still using iOS 6. This is not my field of knowledge at all. What to do?

    New Computer

I mainly focus on server-grade hardware nowadays. The next consumer CPU that will come out will be Broadwell in Q2 IIRC. Those will be 4-core/8-thread chips. Haswell-E (6-core, perhaps 8-core) won't be available before September. I don't know about the top frequency at which they will...

Quad E5-4610 or quad Opteron 6376?

We use Hyper-V 2012 R2 most of the time. We also have one or two ESXi systems, but we won't use vMotion on those. Since this would be for a testing environment, backups would be done manually to a NAS.

Quad E5-4610 or quad Opteron 6376?

When everything is running inside virtual machines, having different architectures for the host doesn't matter IMO.

Quad E5-4610 or quad Opteron 6376?

Found my answer. A Xeon E5-4610 is about on par with a Xeon E5-2630 (100MHz difference between both). So both are more or less equal at virtualization, while Intel's Xeon beats the Opteron more often than not at other workloads despite having less than half the cores. So once the E5-4610 v2...

Quad E5-4610 or quad Opteron 6376?

I don't know why, but text formating has been screwed and I cannot correct it with the editing tool (won't let me save). I've tried with both Epic Browser and Firefox. Must be some weirdo thing with our network.

Quad E5-4610 or quad Opteron 6376?

Both the Xeon E5-46xx and AMD Opteron6xxx are about to be updated. A look at the current generation brought me a question. For a relatively affordable (emphasis on "relatively") quad socket server, what would bring the most performance, a quad E5-4610, or a quad Opteron 6376? I'm not talking...

OpenBSD needs 20K$ to pay electricity bill.

I read that here, which is based on this message. Let's say that they pay their electricity 8¢/KWh, which I assume is a pretty average number (our company pays less than 6¢ per KW/h). In order to climb to 20000$, you have, according to my calculations, to pump a bit more than 28KW per hour...

We don't use SAN switches. We are directly attached to the SAN. Because of a misunderstanding, there won't be hardware replication between our main SAN (3PAR) and our SAN at our remote (backup) location. We'll use Veeam to do it instead. While the reporting manager isn't required before we...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Apparently, the SSD into RAM socket idea isn't that bad. According to this article on enterprisetech.com, it allows to deliver a lot more IOps : More than 3 times the IOps than a server without it. Not bad. Not bad at all. I didn't know that another company than Smart Storage Systems...

The power button is usually quite obvious, either on the front or top of the tower/desktop box. Once opened, the way to shut it down depends on the operating system you use. In Windows 8 or 8.1, you send your mouse cursor to the top or bottom right corner, chose "settings" and then click on...
