    I'm Diskless!

Hey guys, might be an easy question. I'm yet to do a full diagnosis, I just noticed it last night before bed. I switched on my computer, and an error message occured along the lines of "Insert a system disc that you can boot off.". Strange! I hadn't moved anything. The disc is a 3-month-old...

    New computer problems

Well I really havn't taken a look at the CPU. Everything seemed to slip into place perfectly. What would you expect to happen if the CPU wasn't in as expected? No fans / anything happening?

    New computer problems

Time: Thanks mate. I did originally try without the adapter, mainly because I didn't even realise the difference when I bough the gear. Nothing different happens. Bozo: Yeah I tried it, made it hella-stupid, still no luck :/ Tannin: I'm guessing you're on the money. I'm going to buy a new PSU...

    New computer problems

Hey guys, I just put a new PC together: Asus P5LD2 mobo Pentium D 820 Something X300 Thermaltake xp550 np psu I had to get a 20-24 pin adapter for the psu. Basically, I press the power button, and the chassis fans spin maybe one step, but there is nothing after that. If I press the button...

ICQ really WAS the one and only in IM hey. I'm still on, nobody else really is. In response to the origional question. The networks are all much of a muchness. The question you should be asking is where are the bulk of people you will want to be IMing? All my friends use MSN, so I reluctantly...

Advice on buying a network switch

Gigabit Ethernet cards will work faster that 3 or 3 times faster in almost all circumstances. But anyway, back to the original question. I don't know how much you know, but heres a quick education on hubs/switches: -Hubs increase the size of the collision domain (not cool) -Switches decrease...

    USB Flash data loss

I contacted Photorescue. Now I have to decide whether the data is worth more that the service. I can't remember what was on it. I've found a backup of my big program that is only 300 lines lighter than the latest one. Eh. I don't know.

    USB Flash data loss

:o chkdsk... I'm scared. I'm going to take a disk-dump of my FF's first. They're all I have! PS I know I'm in data loss denial here! HELL!

    USB Flash data loss

After looking at the disk in WinHex, I see that there is just some small header data that has in it "FAT16" among other things. Then the disk has a small portion of 00's on it, and is covered almost completely with FF's. I've always had write cache disabled so it's not like I've damaged it by...

    USB Flash data loss

I'm guessing this is futile, but I plugged in my 256MB PNY USB flash drive thismorning and there are no files. None. I had quite a lot on there that I would love to recover. Why has this happened? I really doubt the files have been manually deleted. Is there anything I can do?

    Bigger Drives When?

So hang on. Some of the guys said they would be packing it if they had say > 20GB formatted as fat32. What, other than performance, would someone with a 80GB and a 120GB drive formatted as fat32 be sacraficing. Performance? Integrity? Security?

    Sectors in a track

Thanks mate, clears up a couple of things.
  21. J

    Sectors in a track

Does the amount of sectors per track get larger as you move from the centre track to the outer-most track on a HDD? People say that the sustained read gets faster when the file is placed on the outer-most tracks. I only see that as possible if there is more data in outter tracks.

    Belikin wireless any good?

then again, I wouldn't be buying non-compliant gear. I'm holding out for 11n before I upgrade my AP.
  23. J

    Belikin wireless any good?

If price is what you're after, then buy that 11g stuff. If you want decent transfer speed and distance, and you don't worry about price, then buy the pre-n stuff. Easy.

    NCQ

The article doesn't lie, but it does fail to address that fact that that simulation is very favorable to TCQ and doesn't at all represent how the disk is actually going to be used.

Unlocking clock multiplier on ASUS boards

I saw this a while ago, might be old news, but the good guys at ASUS have released BIOS updates that allow you to unlock the clock multiplier on their boards. This isn't just for their new boards, they are doing this for boards that go as far back as the P4P800 (and a couple of earlier ones)...

Ok this might sound dumb. But when a storage controller is on-board, it is not using the PCI bus is it? What kind of bandwidth does it then have? What bus is it?

    NCQ

What's the status of XP SP2?

Just install it. The biggest thing that shat me was the "security center" that pops-up a balloon EVERY SINGLE TIME you start the system. Then I figured out to make the service a manual one, now it's gold.

    PCI-X and PCI-E: Why?

I'm no authority on the subject, but here's what I've gathered: PCI-X (Extended) is an upgrade from old PCI. PCI-X provides 64-bit IO @ 133MHz. (1 GBps) There is also a PCI-X 2.0 which goes to 533MHz or something insane. http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1087&page=1 Anyway...

Boxes of parts and the elusive "known good"

I've had the same problem. You got to ask yourself, what' more valueable to you, all that junk, or the space it occupies. Looking for a new MB

Ok it could of been the power supply of that particular machine. It was a good board until the blue fire incident. *shudders* I'll retract the statement of Gigabyte being a mistake, I would probably buy them again to tell you the truth, second to Asus of course.[/b]

    Looking for a new MB

    Best GPU for $100

They say not to bother with 256MB cards. My mate is running doom3 on a 3.2 prescott with 1GB PC3200 and a ATI 9600XT 128MB. It chunks up every now and then when walking into a new room. You'd think thats because it's doing a lot more texture loading. Wouldn't more vram make this a less? On ultra...
