    In my experience, carpet padding is too inconsitent in its construction. I would try for some type of closed cell foam. Maybe neoprene or other foam rubber.

    At first I want a server to serve webmail to me to both inside and outside. However, If the server is ever compromised I do not want said intruder to have any more than minimal access to anything else on the inside.

    I have used this on a decidedly un-overclock friendly motherboard and it still worked OK. There were no such settings even in the BIOS.

    You could use one communication point within your house to communicate to the outside over IP. You could control everything on the inside from this one point. Everything on the inside should use a less expensive protocol.

    One advantage to tape on that scale is that the tapes don't have motors. Only the robot and the tape drives are producing heat. It's a moot point if the system can't get data moved around fast enough though.
